Chebacco Woods Land Management Committee

During fiscal year 2003, the Committee focused on five areas of interest: updating the trail maps, implementing the major trail maintenance project, researching and rectifying various abutter encroachments, documenting the amendments to the Land Management Plan, and conducting monthly walks.

To assist law enforcement and safety officials as well as visitors, the Committee ordered 6 inch lettered metal disks which have been nailed high enough in trees to avoid vandalism but low enough to be seen by visitors to enable them to understand their location in the Woods.  New trail maps will be ordered with the locations of the disks marked for easy reference.

Based on the survey work done by Hancock Associates, the Committee discovered various encroachments on the property.  Minor offenders have been given notice to remove various materials.  Compliance will be investigated in the Spring.  The Committee is currently working with the two Town Administrators, town counsel, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, and the property owners involved to solve the remaining encroachments.

As of July 1, 2003, the Land Management Plan was amended to reflect duly approved changes in the plan making the Committee directly responsible for the lawful conduct of its duties.

Sue McLaughlin, often aided by Virginia Cooksen, continued to conduct monthly walks on the property.

Due to postponement of the trail project, the Committee spent only $242.50 of its approved total budget of $1,600.
