Starting January 15, Hamilton residents can apply for an Open Burning Permit from the Hamilton Fire Department for outdoor burning activities, such as managing debris, yard clean-ups, and other controlled burns, as long as all Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) policies are followed, and burning is at least 75 feet from all dwellings.
To apply for an Open Burning Permit, visit the Hamilton Fire Department in-person or complete the application and payment online at Open Burning Permit Application. The permit fee is $20 per season with a discounted rate of $10 for senior citizens. The season runs January 15 – May 1, 2025.
Permits are required for any type of backyard burning and the State fire wardens determine each day whether conditions are safe for open burning. Please note that recreational fire pits, chimineas, and outdoor fireplaces are prohibited in Hamilton. For questions or assistance, contact the Hamilton Fire Department.
