Every January, residents receive their census forms in the mail. Please check your information, make any necessary updates, sign the form, and return it to the Town Clerk’s Office. Census forms are due by the end of January. Even if there are no changes to your household, or if you plan to move after January, your response is still required.
Returning the census is crucial for ensuring that communities receive the resources and representation they deserve. The information collected is used to create the annual street list, which helps local governments maintain accurate records. It plays a vital role in public safety and emergency response, enabling first responders to effectively serve residents. Additionally, census data is essential for applying for grants, calculating state and federal aid, and projecting future school enrollment and costs. It also determines voter registration status—failure to respond can result in being marked as inactive on the voter list. Furthermore, census records serve as proof of residency, which is necessary for veterans’ benefits and in-state tuition eligibility at public colleges. Most importantly, low participation can impact congressional representation and reduce federal funding for vital community programs. Completing the census is a simple yet powerful way for residents to ensure their town and state thrive.
