HAMILTON, MA — This is the first official week on the job for Edward J. Guy III as Chief of Police for the Town of Hamilton. Chief Guy steps into the role following a formal swearing-in ceremony held last week, where local leaders, law enforcement officials, and community members gathered to celebrate the leadership transition.

A veteran of over 30 years in law enforcement, Chief Guy now leads the Hamilton Police Department after the retirement of Chief Russell Stevens, who served in the role since 2009. Guy previously served as Executive Officer of the Andover Police Department, bringing a background in public safety leadership, accreditation, and community engagement.

“This is your police department,” Chief Guy said during the June 25 ceremony. “Our mission and values will be shaped in partnership with the community. I’m honored to lead with integrity, compassion, and professionalism.”

His first day began with briefings from command staff and meetings with town leadership as he officially assumed the responsibilities of the office.

Town Manager Joseph Domelowicz Jr., who led the department’s five-phase hiring process, said the transition is a significant milestone.

“Chief Guy brings experience, thoughtfulness, and compassion to the role of Chief of Police in Hamilton,” Domelowicz said. “We’re confident his leadership will build upon the work begun and carried out by Chief Stevens, and we are confident that the men and women of the HPD will continue to thrive with Chief Guy at the helm.”

During last week’s ceremony, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker administered the oath of office and offered reflections on the impact of both the outgoing and incoming chiefs.

“In selecting Chief Guy, the Town of Hamilton has chosen well,” said Tucker. “He brings over three decades of leadership, education and experience. As he assumes this position, he will follow a well-worn path of success set by Chief Stevens while forging his own vision to keep the Hamilton Police Department at the forefront of modern law enforcement.”

Chief Guy is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds both a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement from Western New England College. In Andover, he led reaccreditation efforts, launched a Community Support Unit, and helped guide the department through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As he begins his tenure, Chief Guy is focused on building relationships within the department and throughout the community. “The strength of this department lies in its people—officers who are deeply committed to serving Hamilton,” he said. “As I begin my new role, I look forward to meeting those in the community and beginning to foster positive relationships with them. I also want to see where the Hamilton Police Department can enhance public safety in Hamilton. One of my priorities will be to assess the police department and see where I can improve on the foundation that Chief Stevens built.”
