Common Victualler’s License
A “Common Vic License” is a permit required for businesses that prepare, serve, or sell food and beverages that are not prepackaged. This license ensures that the establishment complies with health and safety regulations for food service.
A business must obtain this Victualler’s License if it sells food or beverages that require any form of preparation or handling beyond simple resale.
Examples include:
- Brewing coffee or dispensing soft drinks from a machine
- Selling unpackaged baked goods
- Operating a soup station or fresh food counter
- Serving hot or prepared foods
A farm stand may or may not need a Common Victualler’s License, depending on what it sells and how the food is handled. If a farm stand is simply selling fresh produce or prepackaged goods (ex. jars of honey), it would not need the license. However, if it serves freshly prepared food or drinks, a license is required.
