Black Bins

Hamilton provides every household one 35 gallon black bin that can be used weekly to dispose of trash. The lid should be closed completely with no trash peeking out, and the bin must weigh no more than 50 lbs. Our haulers have been instructed to leave surplus trash behind with an orange “rejected” notice.

Any trash in excess of what fits in the black bin must be in a blue plastic Town of Hamilton bag that is available for purchase at Crosby’s, Aubuchon Hardware, and the Hamilton Convenience store. There is no limit on the number of blue bags that can be left curbside. Blue bags come in 33 gallon and 15 gallon sizes, and are sold as:

Roll of 5 – 33 gallon bags: $12.50 ($2.50 per bag)
Roll of 5 – 15 gallon bags: $7.50 ($1.50 per bag)

Yard waste, electronics, bulky items and hazardous waste are not permitted in the black bin and are not collected as part of the Town’s free trash collection service.

All residents are encouraged to mark their bins prominently with their address. If your black bin has been damaged due to storms, misuse or accident, you may obtain a replacement from the DPW Office at Town Hall. You must bring the old bin to Town Hall in order to receive the replacement.

Collection Schedule

Each street receives trash collection services on the same day each week. Click here for the street schedule to see what day your street will be serviced. Please note that if there is a holiday during the week, all trash pickup will be delayed by one day.

All trash bins should be curbside by 7am on your pick-up day. If trash is put out later than 7am,  then the haulers have no obligation to return to get your trash.

Problems with Your Pick-up

If you are experiencing problems with your trash collection, or are uncertain why a particular item was not taken, please contact Casella at 978-548-4427

Bulky Items

Certain items that don’t fit into the black bin will be collected by the haulers if you attach a “bulky item sticker” to it. Bulky stickers cost $15 per item and are available for purchase at Crosby’s, Hamilton Convenience, and the DPW Office at Town Hall (checks are the only acceptable form of payment at the DPW).

With the prepaid sticker attached, one bulky item per week may be placed curbside for pickup along with your regular trash. No appointment is necessary.

Acceptable items for the bulky item sticker program include furniture, over sized plastic toys, carpet, and non-pressure treated wood. Carpet and wood must be cut to less than 3 foot lengths, be tied in a bundle, and not weigh more than 50 lbs.

NEW MATTRESS COLLECTION POLICY

As of November 1, 2022, mattresses will no longer be allowed in the trash collection.

New state rules require mattresses be kept out of the trash, so they can be recycled or donated for reuse.  In order to comply, the Town of Hamilton will change the way it collects mattresses as of November 1, 2022.

Hamilton residents must purchase a “Mattress Bulk Sticker” by check from the Department of Public Works located at Hamilton Town Hall, 577 Bay Road, Hamilton, MA 01982, in the amount of $30.00 for each mattress or box spring. The program costs and grant opportunities will be reviewed annually.

The Hamilton DPW will provide Casella Waste the listing of addresses that have requested mattress pickup for every other Thursday, beginning on November 17, 2022. Please purchase stickers by the Wednesday before, cutoff date will be at noon. Residents not listed with the DPW will not have their mattress collected.

Approximately 600,000 mattresses and box springs are discarded annually in the state, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and more than 75% of mattress and box spring components can be easily disassembled and recycled. Mattresses also take up a lot of space in landfills. Separating them for recycling is better for the planet and reduces the need for additional landfills and municipal waste combustion facilities.
