In response to continued low flow rates in the Ipswich River, the Town of Hamilton has implemented heightened water conservation measures to protect the local watershed and ensure water availability for essential uses effective July 21, 2025.
As of the most recent measurement, the Ipswich River’s discharge near the Willowdale Dam has dropped to 9.23 cubic feet per second, far below the threshold established by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). Under the Town’s Water Management Act Permit and local by-laws, such low flow conditions require immediate conservation action.
New Water Use Restriction & Penalties >>
Outdoor Sprinkler Use Ban:
All use of lawn and garden sprinklers, including drip irrigation systems and subsurface watering devices, is prohibited. This restriction applies to both public and private water sources, including private wells. Hand watering is permitted.
“We understand that these restrictions may pose an inconvenience, especially during the summer months,” said Timothy J. Olson, DPW Director. “However, they are necessary steps to protect our shared water resources and ensure the Town complies with state regulations.”
These measures are essential to maintain a sustainable water supply for residents, emergency services, and environmental health.
The Town of Hamilton thanks all residents for their continued cooperation and commitment to conservation during this critical time.
