Hamilton residents now have a great opportunity to support smart water conservation and make a positive environmental impact. The Select Board has approved a $2,000 subsidy, allowing residents to receive a further $40 discount on already discounted rain barrels. This initiative, approved at the Feb. 24 Select Board meeting, is part of Hamilton’s commitment to sustainable water management. The offer is available for up to 50 barrels, with a limit of one $40 discount per household. Additional barrels may be purchased at the higher rate.

“I’ve felt good about owning a rain barrel for several years, especially during the summer months when we face water restrictions,” said Hamilton resident Jeremy Foster, who played a pivotal role in bringing the initiative to the Select Board and the Environmental Impact Committee—which focuses on advancing meaningful progress toward a net-zero carbon energy future. Foster has seen firsthand the benefits of rainwater collection. “Rainwater from my garage roof can fill a 60-gallon barrel in as little as an hour,” Foster added. “I’m planning to add a second barrel this year.”

In collaboration with The Great American Rain Barrel Company (TGARB), this special discount makes rain barrels even more affordable for Hamilton residents. Rain barrels are an excellent way to conserve water, reduce runoff, and lower water bills. By capturing rainwater from your roof, you can use it for landscaping, gardening, and other outdoor needs, instead of relying solely on municipal water systems. Using a rain barrel helps protect the local watershed environment by using water resources wisely. To receive the $40 discount:

  1. Visit the Great American Rain Barrel website
  2. Place your order online for a rain barrel before midnight on May 18, 2025.
  3. Enter the coupon code HAM25 at checkout to apply the discount. (Must be a resident to purchase)
  4. Print proof of purchase for pick-up day.

To reduce carbon emissions in transportation, Foster has coordinated a single delivery day with neighboring Wenham. The rain barrels will be available for pick-up at the Wenham DPW on May 31, 2025, from 8 AM to 12 PM. Foster plans to volunteer and assist Hamilton residents with their barrel pick-up on that day. The Wenham DPW is located at 91 Grapevine Road, Wenham, MA. Please bring your proof of purchase.
