The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has awarded the Town of Hamilton Recyling Program funds under the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program. The Town of Hamilton will receive $6,600 to maximize recycling, composting and waste reduction programs. The program recognizes Hamilton as a community that has implemented policies and programs proven to maximize materials reuse and recycling, as well as waste reduction.
“The Recycling Dividends Program helps communities leverage the benefits of increased reuse, recycling, composting, and waste reduction initiatives for a healthier economy and environment,” said MassDEP Commissioner Bonnie Heiple. “This is another example of MassDEP’s commitment to building strategic partnerships with our cities and towns to build a more sustainable future.”
According to Hamilton DPW Director, Tim Olson, the town will use the grant funding to reinvest recycling efforts such as purchasing bins for curbside trash, recycling, and compost as well as offset some of the cost for the newly mandated mattress recycling policy.
“Hamilton is proud to be recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for our community’s recycling efforts, said Town Manager Joseph Domelowicz. “Every town, regardless of size, can play a vital role in creating a cleaner, healthier planet. As one of the first towns in the state to mandate recycling, Hamilton is committed to reinvesting this grant money to further improve our program and continue leading by example.”
MassDEP’s SMRP Program provides funding for recycling, composting, reuse, and source reduction activities that will reduce the amount of waste disposed of in landfills and incinerators. Waste prevention and recycling reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing the embodied energy in everyday products and packaging waste and converting it into new products. More than $60 million has been awarded through the program since 2010.
This year, 278 communities across Massachusetts qualified for the Recycling Dividends Program (totaling more than $3 million). The full list of SMRP awards is available by visiting List of 2024 Municipal/Regional Grant Awards. Learn more about the grant.
